HISTORY

Prior to 1991, cooperation among the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and Research Triangle Park, North Carolina communications, public relations and information organizations was almost non-existent. Each promoted its own organization and programs. There often were conflicts regarding meeting times, and the same subject was the topic at more than one group's meeting.

The leadership teams of four public relations and communications organizations were brought together in the Fall of 1990 by Michael Reichgut, a then Raleigh, NC corporate public relations practitioner. He was a member of several of the organizations and had experienced the conflicts first hand.

He now lives and works in California providing expert communications experience to his SolutionsIC Web Design agency. His firm also provides Web Hosting, public relations, marketing and advertising support to its growing list of nationwide clients. He has done Web sites for numerous clients including two HBO movies (one of which was nominated for an Emmy), cities, newspapers, professional organizations and chambers of commerce.

The leadership of the several organizations met to discuss "cooperation." The leadership of the local Public Relations Society of America, International Association of Business Communicators, Women In Communications and the Raleigh Public Relations Society agreed that the time was right to move ahead - together!

Michael Reichgut was the Communications Roundtable's founder and first chair. There have been several different chairpersons since 1990. There also have been many participating organizations.

The Communications Roundtable association grew to include several national organizations. The association of 24 public relations, marketing, graphics, advertising, training, information technology and other communications organizations had more than 12,000 professional members. The goals included furthering professionalism, cooperation between member organizations, career and employment support, employer assistance, and membership services and benefits. It was the largest organization of its type.

With the advent and growth of the Internet, there has been less reason to have a central organization with regular meetings. Thus, we now only maintain the Roundtable Job Bank and online resources as a service to the profession.
