How to stay busy while unemployed
By Christine Wodke, Summit Training Publications
When you have an interview you may be asked how you have been spending your time. You will want to have a good answer, so here are some ideas for spending your time productively.

Brush up your skills
As part of your job search do an assessment of your current skills. Do they line up with the demands of the job market? Take steps to bring your skills up to date. You can enroll in a class online, learn new software, read relevant books, or even join Toastmaster. This can be a good talking point during your interview and while building your skills will make you a more attractive candidate to employers.

Teach
Teaching will brush up your skills since you need more than baseline proficiency to teach as well as bring in much needed income. Teaching sharpens your presentation skills and can also be a good avenue for networking since you will have a class full of students to add to your network. If you are starting a business this can be good advertising.

Network
Join a career network, professional organization or job seekers' group. It is easy to get socially isolated and discouraged while unemployed. Joining a group can keep up your spirits. Networks can be great places to make connections that lead to job interviews.

Part Time Wor
Sign up with a staffing firm or hang out your shingle as a consultant. This can keep up your skills and bring in much needed income. The success you have in these assignments can be discussion points during interviews. Experience in part time work may also help you transition to another industry or career. Project or consulting work can lead to a full time job or at least build your network for job leads.

Start a Business
Do you have a skill that would lend itself to self employment? Have you always wanted to start your own business? The business will be a chance to hone your management skills and provide some needed income. You now have the time it takes to get it off the ground. Again the people you meet will be great to add to your network.

Home Work
Spend time with your family and do all those little projects you never have time to get to. This means jobs you can do for little money, like weeding the garden, painting and other maintenance. This is not a time to take your severance and do a big home improvement project. While unemployed I painted the inside of my garage and touched up all the wood work in my house. Do time consuming but not expensive projects.

Have Fun
Our day to day jobs take up a lot of time. With work and family obligations there is often not much time to have fun. You can't spend all day every day looking for a job without going crazy. Balance out your job search with some fun. Coach your kids sports team, take up a hobby. Do a little travel. Just make sure you stay within your unemployment budget. Having fun can keep you positive and energized in your job search.

The positive energy you get from staying productive will carry over into your job search. This positive energy will be apparent during your interviews and give you a good chance of making a good impression.
