Purdue University is actively recruiting for a Technology Writer who will coordinate and produce communications about new technologies for teaching and learning and other topics from the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology/Chief Information Officer.

 

The technology writer ‎will develop communications for both Purdue and external audiences that articulate the value of information technology to the core University missions of teaching and research, reinforce the message of operational credibility and enhance communication between the CIO and information technology staff. This individual will lead implementation of multimedia communication plans for a variety of technology services, activities and projects.

 

Qualified applicants will have a bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications or related fields and at least three years’ experience in writing and editing for publication.

 

Other key knowledge, skills and abilities:

-          Ability to write explanatory articles, feature stories, press releases, Web content, correspondence, status reports, presentations and speeches for a variety of audiences based on gathered technical information.

-          Knowledge of journalistic conventions and styles (especially AP style).

-          Proven self-starter with a journalist’s ability to conduct independent background research in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines.

-          Ability to establish and maintain relationships and contacts within the University faculty and educational technology communities as well as internally (with editors, graphic designers, photographers, etc.).

-          Knowledge of PowerPoint, photography skill and familiarity with tools for producing Web video are bonuses.

The Transformation Support Services (TSS) project is a complex, dynamic, multi-faceted and change-oriented initiative providing a wide array of consulting services and referrals to both academic and administrative units who serve diverse constituents and have diverse service requirements.  The Communications Coordinator oversees a comprehensive communications program for TSS, including written, visual, and electronic communications.  The incumbent works with management to develop and execute organizational communication strategy; designs and implements information campaigns; and supports development of high quality presentation and related materials.


Responsibilities:

•The Communications Coordinator provides design expertise for communication aspects of the Transformation Support Services (TSS) Project as well as coordination and administrative follow-up on a wide range of project communication needs. 

•Produces high quality products in a wide range of different media (web and print) that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints using one or more venues. 

•Develops, manages and executes a comprehensive communications program for the TSS project, including written, visual, and electronic communications. 

•Provides communications advice and counsel to the TSS project team and others on all aspects of communications, including developing a strong web presence and communications strategies that effectively deliver the desired message, policy interpretation, and problem resolution; may support change oriented communications efforts in consultation with other team members. 

•Supports change management communications plans. Identifies audiences and develops the best vehicle for each. Identifies specific communications needs and develops the content and process for organizational improvements. 

•Responds to calls and emails employing professional verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, to diplomatically communicate with a diverse clientele. 

•Responsible for scheduling functions including appointments, coordination of meetings, workshops and room reservations, utilizing sensitivity to issues, priorities and processes. 

•Develops and implements a comprehensive, multidisciplinary communications program for the project.


Qualifications:

•Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism or related field and/or equivalent experience/training

•Working knowledge and understanding of technical applications (e.g. web design, desktop publishing, PowerPoint, etc.) to personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications 

•Proven ability to produce communication pieces under tight timelines while managing input from multiple key stakeholders, and ensure all materials are accurate and responsive to input from stakeholders 

•Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues including web-based technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most effective applications 

•Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to target and/or broad general audiences 

•Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening 

•Demonstrated high level political acumen skills 

•Strong organizational and time management skills with proven ability to systematically organize, prioritize and complete work assignments with attention to detail in an environment that includes changing and competing priorities, frequent interruptions and distractions, while balancing multiple deadline activities 

•Ability to learn quickly about UC Berkeley--its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and knowledge of current affairs, and issues in higher education 

•Ability to collaborate effectively in a team 

•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact and affect a variety of project stakeholders at all levels, both orally and in writing


Preferred Qualifications

•Strong ability to present ideas and concepts in graphic/visual forms as well as narrative form to achieve effective messaging is a plus

•Knowledge of campus protocols and channels for communication internally and externally

•Experience in working with Salesforce or similar CRM tool

Communications Coordinator, Airlines for America (A4A),

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

This integral communications position is primarily responsible for

handling day-to-day administrative and operational support for media

relations, online communications, database administration and event

planning, as well as other projects and administrative support for the

communications department. Due to the nature of our work on behalf of

the airline industry, the incumbent must be able to juggle and

prioritize multiple competing deadlines and be comfortable working in a

crisis communications event.

*Search, identify and distribute relevant airline and industry news

stories for A4A staff, including Top Airline News each weekday morning

*Maintain communications databases for reporters and members

*Post content to the public and member websites, and intranet

*Log media inquiries and outcomes for A4A spokespeople and generate

reports as needed  

*Keep the communications council member website current

*Draft correspondence and proofread documents as required

*Support social media efforts (e.g., measurement, analytics)

*Maintain and distribute the industry and internal communications

calendars, as well as the personal and departmental calendars for senior

vice president

*Handle all communications-related event planning (e.g., food and

beverage, invite/RSVP lists, signage/meeting handouts, logistics) for

press conferences, the annual media reception, member communicator

meetings and various other meetings/events

*Make travel arrangements for senior vice president and other

department personnel

*Process newspapers, mail, invoices and expense reports, and order

office supplies for the department

*Provide back-up administrative assistance to the executive office

staff

*Other administrative support and communications-related duties as

required


QUALIFICATIONS:

*This position requires a highly motivated individual who is organized

and desires to work in a dynamic, fast-moving, deadline oriented

environment.

*Incumbent must possess strong writing and communication skills, have a

keen attention to detail, is a team player and independent problem

solver.

*Excellent interpersonal skills and a professional telephone manner

with strong command of the English language are also required.

*Ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years of communications or

public relations experience on the Hill, at a governmental agency,

association, public relations agency or corporation.

*Excellent Microsoft Office skills and excellent proofing and editing

skills in AP Style are required. Aviation experience (and/or enthusiasm)

is a plus.  

*Bachelor‚s degree in communications or related field, or equivalent

experience highly desirable.

Handling the morning clips requires the communications coordinator to

distribute the news around 8:30 a.m., therefore, working hours are 8:00

a.m. ˆ 4:30 p.m. Occasional overtime may be required.
